The Minox ZA5 HD 2-10x40 HD is the next generation of the original Minox ZA5 2-10x40, with several updates that should make this scope a contender for 2014. A fully waterproof and fogproof body (one inch main tube diameter) manufactured from a single piece of lightweight aluminum houses premium HD glass. The glass quality on this scope far surpass that of the original ZA5 scopes, and are a definite step above the popular Minox ZV3 rifle scopes.
Construction quality is good, with some tight tolerances. The moving parts of this scope (focus ring, magnification ring, turrets) are all a step above the previous generation of the Minox ZA5. The ZA5 HD 2-10x40's eyepiece and focus ring are both rubber. This is (in our opinion) an upgrade from the Minox ZV3's metal magnification ring, which can present some problems when wearing glvoes in cold weather. The rubber is much more usable. The turrets have also been upgraded from the previous generation, and are much lower and tighter than the high profile turrets on the old ZA5. Clicks are audible and tactile, and the return to zero feature has stayed, which is nice.
Optically, we have no complaints. The clarity and sharpness is a noticable improvement both over the old ZA5 as well as the over-preforming ZV3. The ZV3 3-9x40 was a very impressive release in 2013 as far as optical quality vs. price is concerned, and the ZA5 HD 2-10x40 does slow a slight edge in performance. In additon, the ZA5 HD 2-10x40 also seems to have overcome its predecessor's biggest weakness, which is the rolling ball/field curvature effect seen when looking through the eyepiece. Minox has done a good job of toning it down with this rifle scope, although there is still some slight distortion, especially if the eyepiece is not properly focused.

Care and Feeding of your Minox ZA5 HD 2-10x40
Minox engineers extraordinary durability into every rifle scope they build. However, they are still precision optical instruments and reasonable care should be taken to ensure long-term operational performance. Do not disassemble the scope in any way, as this may damage the seals that make the Minox ZA5 HD fogproof and waterproof. Transport the scope (and firearm, if attached) in a padded case and prevent the scope from experiencing any excessive impact. When cleaning your firearm, be sure to cover the lenses of your Minox ZA5 HD to prevent cleaning agents from contacting and possibly damaging lens coatings. Clean the scope periodically by wiping the body with a soft, lint-free cloth. The objective ocular and objective lenses can be carefully cleaned by brushing away dust and dirt with a soft brush (such as a LensPen). For heavy smudges or spots, a small amount of alcohol or lens cleaner can be utilized. The scope's moving parts have been lubricated at the factor, and no further lubrication should be needed.
