The Styrka S7 8x42 binocular is a solid piece of optical equipment. They look rather nondescript at first glance, with tasteful branding and a modest rubber armored body, and weigh about 24 ounces (with caps attached). The S7 8x42 measures about 5.75 inches op to bottom with eye cups fully extended, which puts them at about an average size for a well-built 8x42 full size binocular. Waterproof, fogproof, nitrogen purged, and every unit is tested underwater at 1 meter for 30 minutes.
Mechanics are solid. The eye cups lock securely into place with little play at all four positions. The lowest position provides enough eye relief to use the binoculars with glasses, so that shouldn't be an issue. The center body hinge is just the right amount of "tight" - no so tight that you have to manhandle the binoculars into the correct interpupillary distance, and also not so loose that they will move once adjusted. The diopter adjustment is smooth and firm, without any grinding or hangups throughout its rotation. Likewise, the focus knob lives up to the same expectations, with slight resistance, yet easy enough to focus with a single finger. From close focus to infinity is about 1.4 turns total. This is appealing to us at least, because it's a good balance between a super fast focus and a super fine (slow) focus.
Ergonomically, there are no complaints. The rubber armor is slightly "stippled," which provides good grip, and the length of the single bridge actually makes the Styrka S7 8x42 binoculars quite comfortable. In one handed operation with one finger on the focus knob, the middle finger naturally rests on the bridge, and the ring/pinky seem to fall comfortably around the body ahead of the hinge. The binocular is just long enough that two hands interlock over the top of the binocular with a little room to spare.
Now, the optics. On paper, the Styrka S7 8x42 has a pretty wide field of view (409 feet @ 1000 yards) which is a major plus for us. Everybody has their preferences, and FOV is high on our list.
That wide field of view combined with the speed of the focus make the Styrka S7 8x42 quite an enjoyable bincoular to use. The clarity and sharpness is nothing short of excellent, and the level of detail you can see through these binoculars is impressive. That sharpness continues to about the last 10% or so of the sight picture, and there were times when we did a double take because it seemed it may have been less than that. In addition, depth of field is also very good as well. Focusing on objects from 150 yards down to about 20 yards required only the slightest turn of the focus knob.
The ED glass in the Styrka S7 8x42 does a pretty good job of cutting out chromatic aberration. We make it a habit to look for CA in every binocular we review, so it tends to jump out at us. With this binocular, however, we had to look at some pretty high contrast objects to see even the slightest hint of CA. Color bias is about as true to life as any binocular we've looked through recently.
Overall, the Styrka S7 is, in our opinion, an excellent performer. There's certainly no shortage of binocular offerings in the midrange ED category, but we think this is one you may want to check out.
