Opticron Discovery WP PC 8x32 Binocular Review

The Opticron Discovery WP PC 8x32 binocular is the smallest and most compact of the Discovery binocular line, with a size that seems more compact than mid-sized.  Weighing just 13.8 ounces and built into a footprint of just 4.3x4.6 inches, it does resemble more of a 25mm binocular than its true size.  Regardless of its little footprint, this binocular still featues the same waterproofing, fogproofing, and fully multi-coated optics with phase corrected prisms.

First glance at build quality shows some very good construction for a binocular out of China.  Compared specifically to its bigger brother the Discovery 8x42, the Discovery WP 8x32 has an ABS polymer body instead of a magnesium alloy frame.  This helps keep the weight under a pound.  Center body hinge is a single bridge type, and there is a tripod adapter hidden beneath the front cap.  Center focus exhibits just the right amount of resistance for single-fingertip adjustment, and turns about 1.75 full rotations from an extremely close focus distance of 3.9 feet to infinity.  

The right side diopter adjustment is actually a step above the one on our 8x42 unit.  It still clicks into place, but more more audibly than the 42mm model. Very affirmative and not too tight.  

As far as ergonomics, these binoculars are very comfortable.  They have three position rubber twist-up eye cups, and the fully extended position is just enough eye relief to see clearly without issues when looking to the sides of the sight picture.  They are light enough to use with one hand, no problems.

We can't really find anything to complain about when it comes down to optical performance on the Opticron Discovery WP 8x32. Great clarity and resolution, a very sharp image, nice 7.5 degree field of view, and some very true-to-life color.  It is odd that it shares the same field of view as the larger 42mm model, since we'd expect something closer to 8 degrees, but anything over 7 degrees is just fine in our book.  There is some slight chromatic aberration when viewing objects that contrast with their surroundings, but none more than expected from an 8x32 binocular at this price.  No noticeable rolling ball or funky field curvature issues.  A solid optical performer.

Overall, the Opticron Discovery WP 8x32 binocular rates very well in our book.  Light weight, some excellent glass, good build quality, and a joy to use.  These binoculars should perform beyond expectations for anybody from the casual backyard birder to the foul-weather hunter, and we'll stand behind them 100%.  Includes Opticron's 5 year Premiere Warrany.
