The Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 rifle scope is another model of the "New for 2013" Monarch 3 series rifle scopes. This scope has a one piece aluminum body, side focus adjustment knob, 4x - 16x magnification, and includes a set of factory flip-up lens caps. On build quality, we've seen some impressive features from the Monarch line, and this scope doesn't disappoint. The lens caps are of similar quality to the aftermarket caps you can get from a hundred other suppliers, but function well and flip up and down without any effort. Every moving piece on this scope is built well, and you can tell that the tolerances are as tight as can be.
The side focus adjustment knob has a lock feature, which is a novel feature that doesn't necessarily add a whole lot of value (how often does the side focus knob move on its own?) But it is a neat concept and you can be sure that when it's in the lock position, it's not moving. The magnification ring moves freely with no dead spots, and the windage and elevation turrets provide great audible and tactile feedback. The Monarch 4-16x42 rifle scope also features a reindexing system on the windage and elevation turrets, allowing you to set the dials back to zero after you've sighted in your rifle - so you'll always be able to adjust for windage and elevation, then return to zero with no headache.
The optics on the entire Monarch line are quite impressive, and this is some seriously good glass for the price you pay. There is little to no chromatic aberration, just the slightest hint of edge fuzziness (barely noticable for all but the most extreme optics geeks), and the sight picture is extremely clear. As with the other Monarch scopes we've reviewed, the color making its way through the scope trends towards warm.
We have no issue with this scope, and the Monarch 4-16x42 is an excellent rifle scope for any hunter or shooter.
This full-sized riflescope features a wide field of view and dawn to dusk brightness, making it the perfect choice for big game hunting. Armed with Nikon’s Ultra ClearCoat™ Optical System and MONARCH 3 Eyebox Technology, it offers superior light transmission and an exceptionally clear sight picture.
All the power necessary for long range varmints, yet a big enough field of view at the low end for close-quarter big game hunting. This all-purpose riflescope is an ideal choice for shooting in the field or on the bench. Scope includes an easy-to-reach side focus parallax adjustment for an unmatched sight picture from any shooting position.
