Minox ZA5 2-10x40 Review

The Minox ZA5 2-10x40 is designed in Wetzlar, Germany and assembled in the United States.  It's a solid scope made of one piece anodiized aluminum with a 1" main tube diameter.  The ZA5 2-10x40 weighs in at exactly 14 ounces.  One thing that is immediately noticable is that the focusing ring is actually made out of rubber, which makes it easer to grip in cold weather while wearing a pair of gloves.  The turret caps are also aluminum but feature raised rubber notches, which is a nice design feature.  The windage and elevation turrets produce nice audible feedback.  The focus ring is a little tight at first, but quickly loosens up and holds position.  A nice inclusion in the package is a scopecoat with the Minox logo.

The glass quality on the Minox ZA5 2-10x40 is extremely impressive, and chromatic aberration is not apparent, but we did manage to produce it on high magnification, a bright background, and constant movement.  The reticle is super fine and we saw no problems with twilight performance.   One interesting note, the color seen through the scope is actually slightly more vivid than what the non-scoped eye perceives.  The clarity is representative of German optics.

We recently did a comparison between the Minox ZA5 2-10x40 and the Minox ZV3, and found that there were many similarities, but the ZA5 shows its value in some key areas.  Most prominent is the upgraded turrets, turret covers, and overall fit and finish.  

The Minox ZA5 2-10x40 will compete directly with some of the bigger names, and will do so with a lower price tag.
