The Opticron Verano BGA HD is an open-bridge roof prism binocular that immediately reminds us of the Minox BL open bridge design. At exactly 26.2 ounces, it falls into the middle of the pack as far as size and weight, yet the body design helps make up for it by being very easy to grip. Speaking of the Minox BL, the Verano has the exact same feel, easy to grip with the middle two fingers while the index and little finger rest on the body bridges.
The eye cups on the Verano 8x42 are four position twist up cups, not unlike those found on just about every roof prism binocular in this price category, and they are very "clicky." Good audible and tactile feedback, and there is no question that the fourth position is perfect for those without glasses. There's more than enough eye relief with these cups for eyeglass wearers as well (yes, we've tested this).
The Verano BGA HD 8x42 utilizes a traditional right eye diopter adjustment instead of the type found on the focus wheel of a lot of Opticron models. The diopter is just the right tightness, not too hard to turn nor too easy to accidentally adjust, and the focus knob makes about 1.6 revolutions from close focus (6.6 feet) to infinity. This is one area where we though the Verano performed very well. Usually, a faster focus is preferable (to us) yet the depth of field is so deep at most distances that the turn required is minimal. Again, the exception is wide adjustments in viewing distance.
The view through the Verano 8x42 is nothing short of excellent. There is very good CA control, but there is some slight color fringing when viewing high contrast objects, but nothing more than to be expected, and some may never notice it. The clarity and sharpness is what you'd expect from a binocular at this price, both very good, and while there is no noticable field curvature, there is something there that made us feel like it was happening. But a close look showed this to not be the case. Color is as true to life as any other binocular we've reviewed. True to life, but very vivid. A quick glance at some of the local European starlings caused a double take, the colors seemed to jump right out.
The best part about the optical performance, however, is the 7 degree field of view. Of course, a larger field of view is always better, but we were glad to see 7 degrees as it's our desired minimum. Again, in a short session, we were able to acquire and track some fast moving birds with no problem.
A huge plus is the presence of some high quality objective caps. Nothing irritates us more than caps that don't attach. Also included with the Opticron Verano BGA HD 8x42 is a plastic rain guard, neoprene neck strap, and a high quality leather carrying case.
Overall, we are very happy with the Opticron Verano BGA HD 8x42. It's a solid piece of optical engineering, it's very comfortable, the optics perform very well compared to others in its class, and above all else, it's easy to pick up and use immediately. This is another Opticron model that has managed to impress us, and we'll recommend them without question.
Building on the strengths of previous Verano models the Verano BGA HD features a fully revised optical system that delivers a vivid ‘true to life’ viewing experience essential for accurate wildlife observation.
