The Luna Optics LN-DM2-C Digital Night Viewer is an entry level digital night vision monocular with color capability. Unlike conventional night vision, this unit is digital, meaning it does not include tubes, and is therefore also able to be used during daylight.
The unit itself is very lightweight, weighing just 13 ounces. With dimensions of 5.5 x 2.2 x 3.3 inches, it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand during use. The body design is the same used by many manufacturers, but this is the first we've seen that utilizes digital technology.
There are two buttons on top of the unit, where the tips of your fingers rest during operation. The button closest to the eyepiece turns the LN-DM2-C on and off, and the second activates or deactivates the IR illuminator. Further ahead of these buttons is a wheel that is recessed into the body. This wheel controls the brightness of the LCD screen when looking through the unit. During daytime use, this will have to be turned down all the way to prevent the image in the LCD from being washed out.
There are two focusing mechanisms on the Luna Optics LN-DM2-C, one on the eyepiece and one on the objective lens. They both work together to properly focus the objects in your field of view. To obtain a sharp image, rotate the eyepiece in either directoin until you find the spot where the image looks best. Next, rotate the objective lens until the image is, again, at its best. You may need to repeat this process multiple times to achieve the sharpest image possible. Once you have a clear image, you can focus on objects at any distance by rotating only the objective focusing mechanism.
The Luna Optics LN-DM2-C also includes a built-in IR (infrared) illuminator. The IR illuminator emits a beam of light in a spectrum that is normally invisible to the human eye, however with the help of the CCD in the digital night viewer, this will make the image in the LCD screen appear brighter and better illuminated. It is important to remember that like a flashlight, the IR illuminator is brightest at shorter distances. As distances increase, the intensity of the illuminator fades.
Digital Night Vision
Digital night vision operates with batteries. Unlike a daylight binocular, where you see the image due to light traveling through teh glass and prisms, the digital night vision device works by projecting the image onto an LCD screen. While the CCD and the LCD are the curcial components of your viewer, the optical components of the unit are also very important, as they gather the light into the CCD and bring the projected image from the LCD screen to our eye. Since the image is projected on the screen, just like any TV, it has certain limited resolution. Digital night viewers cannot provide the same crystal clear image that you would see through conventional daytime binoculars. They are designed to be used in a dark environment, where your vision is very limited.
Color digital night viewers have color capabilities, but some colors may not be true reproductions due to limitations in CCD resoloution and color reproduction ability. This will be most apparent when the IR illuminator is powered on and in use. This is considered normal and is not a defect.
Digital viewers are designed for operation in dark conditions, but they can also be used during daylight hours. Please note that during daylight, you will have to reduce the brightness level of the unit to prevent the image from being washed out.
